There are an estimated 35 million people visually impaired and 0.24 million blind children in India. Most of the blindness and visual impairment were due to avoidable causes [92% and 96%] respectively. Among avoidable causes treatable causes of blindness and VI are 68% and 86% respectively. Cataract and Refractive errors remain the leading causes of blindness and visual impairment

National Programme for Control of Blindness and Visual Impairment (NPCB), 1976 designed a slogan,

“Eye clinic at your door”,

in keeping with the preamble of the programme,

“To preserve the eyesight of every citizen is a national duty”.

Dr Anilkumar’s Eye Hospital has taken a mission to provide “Affordable, accessible and accountable eye care for the people in need”

Our hospital’sight-saving blindness prevention strategy involves having a team of personnel consisting of eye health care workers, eye health care educators, or ophthalmic assistants are trained to provide eye care and blindness prevention services at the village or door-to-door level.

Since its formation Dr Anilkumar’s Eye Hospital under the leadership and guidance form Dr Anilkumar has been conducting community ophthalmology services to combat preventable blindness among under-served populations

He is the only private practitioner in Virudhunagar district to conduct free eye camps to the public every day for the past 35 years.

Dr. Anilkumar’s regularly conduct eye camps for the benefit of cataract, Glaucoma and diabetic patients& has done more than 30,000 cataract surgeries through camps. The camp services cater to workers in Fire work factories, offset printing industries, match industries etc., in and around Sivakasi, Rajapalayam, Kovilpatti, Srivilliputhur and Virudhunagar District.

Regular eye camps are conducted in all schools including Government and private: examining more than 10000 school children a giving free counselling under Dr. Anil Kumar’s Guidance and leadership.

Continuing Dr. Anilkumar’s Public service His son DR. Praveen Kumar MBBS, DO, FRCS(UK) & daughter in law DR. Rasmi Praveen MBBS, DO, FPOS, FRVS started the Sivakasi vision charitable trust for the prevention of preventable avoidable curable blindness.

Jointly with Rotary International 3212 Global Grant, Rotary club of Sivakasi and Sivakasi Vision charitable trust has launched a mobile screening vehicle in its mission to screen and eradicate most common preventable causes of blindness worldwide and India as well. It has covered more than 50000 people so far and has identified and treated more than 1000 people with diabetic retinopathy cataract and glaucoma.

Sivakasi Charitable Trust under DBCS scheme also conduct free cataract camps and cataract surgeries for the underserved population
